UBMS Robotics at Rolling Meadows VEX Competition

The UBMS program participants at Rolling Meadows High School for the VEX Robotics Qualifying Competition December 3rd, 2011.
We are happy to announce that all three robotics teams that enter the competition moved to the alliance final stage of the event. This is the second competition that the UBMS Robotics Club participate since deployment of the program.

Moving ahead with our STEM student projects to Promote Engineering through Computer Programming. This Fall student are learning to use Kodu Game Lab and XNA Game Studio 4.0. Students from J.S Morton East participating in MIT's & NASA's Zero Competition.

The moment has come once again to deliver exciting programs to potential and returning participants.

Program Orientation: September 17^th, 10am to 1pm
Where: Chicago Teachers Center, 770 N. Halsted St. 4^th Floor room 414 Chicago, IL 60642

Registration is open to all students that attend the following schools: Clemente, Kelvyn Park, Mather, Michele Clark, Roosevelt, Senn, J.S. Freshman Center, J.S. Morton East and J.S. Morton West. Potential participants need to be citizens or residents of the U.S. and be low income and/or first generation college bound with and academic need.

Lastly, we will deliver our STEAM Student Conference 2012 on Friday, March 23th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. Students that participate in our project/initiatives will have a chance to present at the conference.

Have you ever been interested in STEM Project based learning oriented to specific STEM careers?
The UBMS program is offering a free workshop on Engineering and Architecture to teachers 7-12th and staff from informal education programs.

The workshops will take place at the Chicago Teachers’ Center in the following order:

Engineering: Robotics with VEX - Cancelled

Architecture: Design for social improvement
In this workshop participants will learn how design and implement an after school program or continuos activities that improve math, science and engineering design concepts. Participants will learn Architecture concepts and Architectural design using Google Sketch Up.
Space is limited to 12 teachers/staff per workshop
When: August 26th, 2011 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Engineering: Mobile Application Development
In this workshop participants will learn how design and implement an after school program or continuous activities that improve math, computer programming, critical thinking and engineering design concepts. Participants will learn Engineering concepts as they relate to the field of programming and Mobile Application design using App Inventor by Google.
Space is limited to 12 teachers/staff per workshop
When: August 26th, 2011 from 1:30 am to 4:30 pm

The UBMS summer BLAST component provides academic classes and project based learning to 75 high school student. Please feel free to walk in to our classrooms and interact with our students.

Also, we invite you to attend our Student Symposium practice that will take place August 3rd 2011 at 12 p.m. at NEIU’sAlumni Hall or the Final Presentation on August 3rd 2011 from 6pm to 8pm.

Summer BLAST Orientation June 24th, 2011 @ NEIU

Student Orientation will be held at NEIU from 10am to 1pm in the Student Union building Alumni Hall. 5500 N. St. Louis Ave, Chicago, IL 60625

The UBMS program has released its pre-registration for the summer BLAST 2011 program. There are only 50 seats available. The summer program starts June 24th with orientation and end on August 5th with its culminating event. Summer program participants will be engaged in academic content and project based activities. Our academic content will provide integrated science, computer programing, integrated math and literature. In our project based activities participants will be engaged in Film Special Effect and Digital Photography, Android Mobile App Development, Game Design with Xbox 360 Kinect and Architecture.
Participants will also be emerged in chinese foreign language and culture, integrated field trips and camping trip to further develop academic and personal growth. To pre-register please click on our pre-registration tab and fill out the form.

UBMS Spring Student Symposium 2011

Students presented the work they have been doing in their individual projects as part of Upward Bound Math and Science Spring Student Symposium. In collaboration and partnership with Columbia College Science and Math department, the UBMS program participants delivered their results and shared their experience on May 16th, 2011 at Columbia College Ferguson Auditorium.
Students worked on one of three project based activities including robotics, animation and cancer cell research. UBMS curriculum includes student oriented learning approaches that allows its participants to develop team-building, inquiry problem solving and technology skills all while engaging in STEM careers.

UBMS at VEX Robotics Competition

UBMS Robotics after school club from Mather High School competed in in the Great Lakes Midwest Illinois VEX Robotics Regional Championship on Feburary 12, 2011. This is the first year of the Robotics Club at Mather and the girls' team ROBOchicas scored Best Judge Award. Robotics is one aspect of of the Upward Bound Math and Science program which teaches engineering, physics and other concept of math, science and technology to high school students.

UBMS | Spring semester projects begins

The UBMS program will begin its spring semester courses on February 19th, 2011. The UBMS serves 6 Chicago Public Schools and 3 District 201 high school students.

The UBMS is offering 4 project based, technology driven and centered around professional career programs for its participants. The programs offered are Animation, Architecture, Cancer cell research and Android app development.

Students in the animation project will be involved in distance learning using a variety of apple and adobe products. Students in the architecture project will be engaged in a competition developed by the Chicago Architecture Club and the Chicago Architecture Foundation using Google tools such as Google Earth and Google Sketch Up. Student participating in the cancer cell research project will be working along side professionals in the field along with Columbia College and NEIU Faculty to understand lab base research and visualization of data driven results. Finally, the Android app development project will introduce participants to the world of mobile app development to create a diverse group of apps that will be useful for the participants and their communities, this project will use Google App inventor as the platform for development.

The Upward Bound Math and Science, UBMS, program is proud to unveil the next stage towards improving the quality of service provided to our participants, their schools, their families and their communities. This new stage on program development consist on disseminating the work we have began to explore in the STEAM , (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), areas through collaborations with other institutions, distance learning Saturday sessions and after school clubs.

We hope that by providing a space where our programming can be viewed and explored that it will encourage and support the growth and development of STEAM programing. Therefore, we have invested time to create a blog that will bring up to date program information to everyone that might be interested in the UBMS program. Similarly, we have updated our website and facebook page to provide current program information.
